YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki announces that YouTube will start adding information from Wikipedia to conspiracy theory videos
YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki recently made a huge announcement at SXSW. The announcement follows – YouTube will start adding information from Wikipedia to conspiracy theory videos. Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia used by millions of people around the world was kept in the dark.
“When there are videos that are focused around something that’s a conspiracy — and we’re using a list of well-known internet conspiracies from Wikipedia — then we will show a companion unit of information from Wikipedia showing that here is information about the event,” Wojcicki said.
According to Wikimedia, the partnership isn’t a formal one with either Wikipedia or Wikimedia. “We are always happy to see people, companies, and organizations recognize Wikipedia’s value as a repository of free knowledge,” the company said.
Conspiracy theory videos and misleading information have been floating on social media platforms for a long time. This move by YouTube certainly adds a layer of shield against such videos. The plan is being criticised for a number of reasons. One of the reasons for criticism is keeping Wikipedia and Wikimedia in the dark. Although, YouTube does not need to officially partner with Wikimedia as the information available on Wikipedia is freely licensed for reuse by anyone. It’s still a bemusing strategy to go ahead without officially discussing with Wikimedia.
